“The longboards are fun to do as you have a huge canvas and the Lush guys I know from skating with them so they get my work. I really like working on skateboards, the iconic lozenge shape I see almost as CD or album covers where you’ve got this classic, defined space within which to work – longboards are a bit different, so fun and a bit of a challenge.”
We’re in the middle of a pretty hectic week of travelling here at Lush HQ… showing off all our 2012 boards at Bright Trade Show in Berlin last weekend, and getting ready for ISPO in Munich next weekend. And a weekend of snowboarding after that
If you’re coming to ISPO, all our stuff is on the Vandem-MFG stand, A2/122. See you there for a beer!
We’ll have a full run down of events after the show… in the meantime, you can keep up to date with happenings on the Vandem-MFG Twitter account.
We have another new board in the 2012 lineup to show off… the Duder is our stab at a mid-length cruiser.
Simple, clean, sexy. It’s slightly rockered for super nice board feel, which also has the effect of lifting the tail a little.
It’s not too long – 36.35″ – so you can carry it on the tube or sling it under your desk – but it’s still long enough to be a true “longboard” and way more skateable than these tiny plastic things that are all the rage right now…
If you’re after a longboard for nipping to the pub or down the shops on, here’s one that’s actually had some thought put into it.
While this maybe isn’t what you want for blasting your local hill or chucking giant standies, we think you will be hard pushed to find a cruiser that skates better than this. Don and Giovanni Approved!
Happy New Year! 2012 is going to be mental if you’re into this longboarding thing… there’s already loads of trips and events appearing on the horizon. We’re kicking things off with another new board – the Accelerator!
Looking for a rockered, mini freeride deck? Look no further… We took the Elevator and made it a little smaller, producing a super fun freeride and cruise setup. It’s 9ply maple – you could probably even race it if you really wanted.
Rockered, like many of our other decks this year, we love the board feel and we think you will, too…
Internationally renowned designer and good friend of ours Pete Fowler is the man behind many of our new graphics. We often get asked how we do our deck artwork – here’s a step-by-step…
Once we have the final shape nailed down (shape, skate, re-shape, re-skate, repeat!), Pete takes our outline and works his magic with a pencil and paper…
Early Antuna concept, before we added the Kraken. Diving and Astronomy are Manu’s main pastimes outside skating, so the graphic has plenty of both…
He hand hand draws to start, giving us a pretty good idea of what the graphic composition will be like. Once we’re all happy, Pete will scan his drawing, colour it in Adobe Illustrator and make it ready for screen printing.
The Shralper, part-way through the colouring process…
Once the graphics file is done, the artwork is printed to a clear heat transfer, then applied to the deck with a pair of heated rollers. This gives a full-colour, super-durable representation of Pete’s original artwork, printed on the deck.
Now we understand that most people who want high-end race decks will probably go for deck only and a custom build… but we had a few things lying around here to make a “Super” complete, and here it is.
This complete build of the Antuna is not going to be cheap… but what better way to honour the man himself than with the highest-spec setup we’ve ever put together?
We usually make small changes to our gloves each time we do a run, and this time we thought we’d step the game up a few notches on the already awesome Race Gloves to produce this – the imaginatively-titled Deluxe Race Gloves.
Changes are:
Thicker, removable 15mm Palm puck, machined from Delrin.
Kevlar finger and thumb patches. You really don’t need finger pucks any more, Kevlar is extremely abreasion resistant.
Silica/amara wrist protection. We found this to be a weak point in the original Race Glove, so we’ve beefed it up.
These gloves are tried and trusted by some of the fastest racers in the World, among them:
Dominik Kowalski – Professional Stuntman
Sebastien Hertler – here’s a video of him not putting his hands down…
Rebekka Gemperle (who just won two races in a row in two weekends! congrats!)
Stephan Risch – organiser of so many legendary races, he’s still got speed as you can see…
Pete Connolly – British #1 and all-round downhill hero…
Ramon Konigshausen – superfast Swiss Slalom and Downhill skater, one of the people behind Greener Pastures…
Yvon Labarthe – here’s his cracking video of the Verdicchio Race this summer, if you haven’t seen this already, watch it now…
These gloves are not cheap… but they are the most durable and comfortable all-round race glove we’ve ever made, and considering how long we’ve been making gloves for, that’s quite a claim!
